LIGHT IN THE NIGHT

It was 8:00 PM when I finally arrived at my apartment. My day had begun at 6:00 AM and had been filled with a project site visit, quality audits, employee interviews, and an exhausting six-hour drive back home. I dropped my bags and sank into a chair, overwhelmed with gratitude to the Lord for bringing me home safely. From morning until evening, my friend and I had faced one challenge after another. Looking back, I could only acknowledge that it was by His abundant mercy and unfailing grace that we had returned home safely.
After breakfast, my friend and I came down from our hotel rooms, ready to leave for the project site. Just as we were about to start the car, we discovered that the left rear tyre was completely flat. Since we could not drive to a tyre shop, we had no choice but to change it ourselves. Fortunately, the car was parked on a firm, level, tiled surface, making it relatively easy to use the jack. Had the same problem occurred on the road or at the project site, the task would have been far more difficult.
When we arrived at the project site, we were confronted with a distressing situation. As QHSE managers, we were immediately surrounded by employees eager to share their concerns and grievances. It was already the 14th of the month, yet their salaries for the previous month had not been paid. Basic amenities and welfare facilities were either unavailable or inadequate. Amid these troubling circumstances, we also witnessed an accident in which an employee accidentally cut his hand while operating a grinding wheel. After addressing the matters before us, we eventually completed our site visit and departed.
Following lunch, we began the long, monotonous six-hour drive back to our head office. Much of the route passed through sparsely populated desert terrain along a winding, single-carriageway road. About two hours into the journey, we stopped for coffee. Refreshed, we resumed our drive.
My friend and I had worked together for more than six years, and we never lacked things to talk about. Although we came from different countries, we shared a common faith in the Lord. Our conversation wandered from our children and company matters to El Niño, making the long journey seem shorter.
Our route took us along Way 27 and then onto Way 32, from where we were supposed to turn onto Way 33. Winter had already set in, and darkness descended as early as 5:30 PM. I was driving and, absorbed in our conversation, missed the turn. We travelled several kilometres before realising that we had passed the junction where we should have turned right.
My friend checked Google Maps and advised me to continue for a few more kilometres before turning right at another junction. We appeared to be travelling along a village road without any streetlights. The headlights of our ten-year-old vehicle were so dim that they illuminated barely 10 to 20 metres ahead. I slowed down to approximately 40 km/h, but the worn-out and barely visible road markings made driving even more challenging in certain stretches.
When my friend informed me that we still had another 30 kilometres to travel along that road, my heart began to race. To make matters worse, a light drizzle began to fall, further reducing visibility. The darkness seemed to close in around us, and every kilometre became a test of patience, alertness, and trust.
With little else to guide me, I focused on the white markings along the edge of the road and the reflective studs positioned along its centre. I followed these small but vital markers, carefully keeping the vehicle within the road's boundaries.
During daylight, when the road ahead is clearly visible, we scarcely notice these markings or appreciate their importance. We can see far into the distance and confidently anticipate the way forward. But in the darkness, when our vision is limited and uncertainty surrounds us, those seemingly insignificant markers become indispensable guides.
By carefully following them, I eventually navigated that difficult stretch of road safely and reached Way 32. As I settled back into the familiar route, my thoughts turned from the road before me to the journey of life itself.
How often does life place us in a similar situation?
Sometimes, darkness falls unexpectedly. Circumstances change, familiar directions no longer seem reliable, and the path ahead becomes uncertain. We may find ourselves facing difficulties we never anticipated, struggling to make decisions without knowing what lies around the next bend. Fear and anxiety begin to rise within us, and we wonder how we will find our way forward.
Like the reflective markers that guided me through that dark and unfamiliar road, God's Word provides the light we need to take the next step. It may not reveal the entire journey at once, but it gives us sufficient light to walk in the direction He has shown us.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105
The experience left me with a deeper reminder: When the night is dark and the road ahead is uncertain, let His Word be your light. Follow His guidance one step at a time, and trust Him to lead you safely according to His perfect wisdom and unfailing grace.
