Me….Donkey
What if Balaam’s donkey could tell its own story? Step into the shoes (or hooves) of a faithful servant who saw what its master could not. I was sincere and faithful to my master—qualities of a good servant. I truly was a good servant, as you will soon see. We were on a journey to meet a very important person. My master was also a prominent man, which is why he had been invited to the meeting. The journey was pleasant, and we traveled slowly because there was no hurry. It was morning, the weather was ideal, and the road passed through vineyards and green fields that were refreshing to the eyes.
As we continued along the road, I saw a person standing in our path. I had no choice but to step into the vineyard to avoid him. My master became angry because I had left the road and struck my back harshly. He may have thought I was being stubborn and causing trouble. A little farther on, I saw the same person again, standing directly in our way as if trying to stop us. This time there were walls on both sides, and he stood where there was barely any room to pass. I tried to move forward carefully, since I had already been beaten once and did not want it to happen again. Unfortunately, my master’s foot was crushed against the wall and badly bruised. His pain was worse than before, and his blow shook my whole body.
As we went farther, the road narrowed until only one person could pass. Once again, the person appeared before me, leaving no space to move. He looked terribly angry because I had not stopped. He held a sword in his hand, and the sight frightened me so much that I fell to the ground. My master, now completely out of control, beat me for the third time.
You know miracles happen: fire falls from heaven, water gushes from a rock, manna comes down from the sky, and the Red Sea divides like a wall. This, too, was a miracle—one that had never happened before and has not happened since. My mouth was opened, and I could speak. You may wonder why that was so amazing. I was an ass—not a human being. Yes, what a miracle it was! Gathering all my courage, I asked my master, “Why have you beaten me these three times?” My master could not have expected this and may not have believed his own donkey was speaking. Yet, in his anger, without realizing the wonder before him, he replied, “What do you think you are doing, you stupid ass? Are you mocking me? Can’t you walk straight without troubling me? If I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.” I said to him, “Am I not your donkey, the one you have ridden all your life until this day? Have I ever behaved this way toward you before? I have remained obedient and faithful to you until now.” My master answered truthfully, “No.”
Even the miracle of his own donkey speaking could not calm my master’s anger. But suddenly, he fell facedown to worship. The Lord opened my master’s eyes, and he too saw the Angel standing before him with a drawn sword.
Balaam had been hired by Balak and was on his way to curse the children of Israel. But God sent His angel, opened the donkey’s mouth, warned Balaam, and stopped him from cursing them. Who can curse those whom God has already blessed?
So do not be afraid. In the Lord Jesus Christ, you are already blessed, and no curse can overcome what God has spoken over your life. If He could open the mouth of a donkey to protect His people, He can use anything and anyone to defend, guide, and deliver you. Take courage—God is on our side. His hand is over us, His protection surrounds us, and His blessing will stand forever. Stay blessed.
