Paradise
I am standing at the gate of Paradise. What I see and hear here cannot be fully written, because human language is not sufficient to describe it. Yet I clearly remember how I lived on earth and where my life ended.
The Life I Chose
When I was born, our land was ruled by the Romans. We had lost every right and lived like slaves. I grew up surrounded by poverty, cruelty, and many atrocities committed by the Romans.
My parents were good people; they taught me what was right and tried to correct and guide me. But at a young age, I learned evil ways and developed a passion for robbery, whether great or small. Soon I became notorious in our area and landed in jail. When I came out, bad companions made me an even worse criminal. I committed many crimes and finally landed on the cross—the highest punishment for a hardened robber.
At the Cross Road
Then the day came—the final hours of my life. I heard that I would not be alone on the journey; another two men were joining me. I knew I had lived a very evil life, the very life I had chosen. I had no regrets, because my conscience had died long ago—or rather, I had killed it. It was a well-deserved punishment.
On that Friday morning, three of us were crucified publicly and half naked: me, another notorious robber, and a teacher called Jesus. The city gathered at the place called Golgotha.
Mockery and Mercy
When I saw Jesus, who claimed to be the Messiah, He was also hanging on a cross and suffering the same pain as we were. The other robber and I mocked Him, slandered Him, and ridiculed Him: “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.” Yet He did not answer our reviling.
I was in excruciating pain. Blood was leaving my body, my strength was failing, and every breath became a struggle. These were the final moments of a cruel death, and the scene was horrifying.
Then I heard Jesus speak these words:
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”
The Turning Point
The cross was one of the cruelest ways to die. Usually, those who hung there cried out in pain, fear, and agony. Some begged for mercy. Others cursed the Romans, the soldiers, or the people watching.
But Jesus pleaded for the very people who had crucified Him. It seemed impossible for any ordinary human being. Surely, He was who He claimed to be—the Messiah. My eyes were opened, and I saw the Light. I longed to fall at His feet and worship Him.
In my unbearable pain, during those dark final hours, I rebuked the other robber who was blaspheming. Then, with a trembling voice, I pleaded with Jesus: “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”
When He heard my stumbling, feeble voice, He looked at me with love and mercy. Then He replied gently: “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
Grace at the Final Hour
All my life had been full of evil and disobedience. I had lived without the fear of God, and my life had been wasted. But in that one precious moment, I saw the Light, humbled myself, and turned to Him.
The Lord gives grace to the humble, and He will never cast away anyone who comes to Him. In mercy, He received me.
Here I Am—Paradise
Now I am here, not because of anything good I had done, but because of His mercy. My final prayer was weak, yet His grace was strong. In my last hour, He remembered me—and brought me into Paradise.
